Traffic hold-ups are likely to become an issue during the Chennai Corporation election next week.
Vehicle population in the city has more than doubled in four years. The number of two wheelers is 17.5 lakhs, four-wheelers about 5 lakhs and transport vehicles one lakh.
In the past two terms of the civic body, flyovers and bridges came up as a solution to decongestion. Some solutions did not advance beyond the blueprint stage. For example, the Rangarajapuram subway to connect Kodambakkam and T.Nagar did not take off for five years now. At the Vadalapani junction, vehicles coming from Kodambakkam are diverted through Ashok Nagar. A flyover at the junction of Arcot Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road would help traffic flow, say road users.
If the Greenways Road-Durgabhai Deshmukh Road junction in south Chennai is congested, the Tirumangalam-Anna Nagar junction in central Chennai is turning into a vehicle users' nightmare.
