Chennai
Chennai the new Tech hub. Humid weather. The Masala dosas and smell of sambar in the air. Nariyal Pani. The Marina beach. The sweet smell of Jasmine garlands. The AIADMK and the Almighty JAYA. Shivaji Ganeshan and Kamal Hassan. Temples built for heroines and self-immolation bid for not getting ticket in a theater screening a Rajnikant movie. The Natural Icecreams. The temples. But what about the roads and traffic condition here? Discuss and share.

Angry Reckless Two Wheeler Drivers!

Any one who drives in Madras that is Chennai would have observed the total recklessness with which the drivers of (present day powerful) two wheelers whirrrr.. around. It is NOT an exaggeration to say that their lives are TOTALLY in the hands of four wheel drivers. If only the drivers of 4 wheelers are a bit careless, there would be many more fatalities of 2 wheeler drivers, who take things for granted! I am unable to understand as to why they should squeeze in their vehicles in impossible gaps which are ever narrowing down. What’s the hurry (to reach heaven)? No one, particularly the Police, seem to bother! They cut across lanes with total disdain to the dismay of other road users!

Similarly many road users park their vehicles with total disregard for others. They don’t even pause to think of the inconvenience caused to others at all. It is impossible that all road users are always in a hurry. Yes, there are occasions when all of us are in a hurry, BUT NOT ALL THE TIME! In any case none of us have the right to cause not just inconvenience but total obstruction of the way to others whatever be our own urgency! There are many occasions when I found my car totally obstructed by one motorcycle right in front parked across (not parallel to the footpath but perpendicular to it!) and another right behind with no space to maneuver at all!.

It is the attitude of the present day road users....

Today Road Users just don’t care either for others or for the rules, traffic signals or their own lives ! I have had to replace my side rear view mirror four times as it has been broken by the 2 wheelers who are ever in a hurry! Even when the red light is ON & when the traffic is halted, the ever zealous 2 wheeler (m/c for short) driver zigzags through all the vehicles breaks a few rear view mirrors in the process, without as much as a simple ‘sorry’!

There was a case with me when the driver of a m/c parked his m/c extremely close to the front left wheel of a stationary car (waiting at a signal) and put his foot right in front of it! There was no way the driver of the car will know the position of his foot! When traffic signal turned green, naturally the car driver started moving almost crushing the foot of our friend, who having escaped a crushed foot, proceeded to pick up a fight with the car driver! There was of course another incident when the same car driver experienced another m/c which took a U turn in front of his moving car!

It is high time the Police and other authorities and the public in general pull up such erring people. To put the record straight it is NOT education that is needed but punishment, for one cannot educate the educated! Heavy fines and other forms of punishment (incl. deflating the tyres) should be the order of the day.

Coming to issue of ‘fines’, it is high time the ‘fines’ are made very heavy for ALL violators of rules. The biggest traffic violators are the heavy vehicles including the State Transport buses and trucks. One can travel in any state or National highway and count in finger tips the number of trucks with rear red lights working. It is amazing to find that, truck owners/drivers who operate trucks worth about Rs. 10 lacs, carrying several lacs worth of goods do NOT want to spend less than Rs. 100/- to repair the rear red-lights which are extremely important in night driving. This is simply because of indifference of Police or their ‘mamool’ habit. If only the ‘fines’ are made much heavier than what they are today, the rates of ‘mamool’ will also go up & the truck drivers/owners will find it cheaper to repair their lights, brakes etc. and keep them working!

Let us all pray and hope for the best!!!!

Reckless Two Wheeler Drivers!

I think the 2 wheelers are in a bad shape themselves.
1. Most do not wear the helmet. Instead they have flimsy caps that fly off their heads when they increase speed or whenever there is a gust of wind.
2. Some drive it with their families on board, especially the small one on the petrol tank evokes a lot of sympathy and involves a lot of handicap to the rider during turns and while taking sharp turns. The middle one is wedged in between the parents without a foot rest and god forbid !! the third one would invariably be perched on the rear end clutching for life to number 4 on the seat ...
3. the daring tendency to speed up and prove their skill (? ) to the 4 wheelers in crowded roads; inching their wheels and legs in the path of the 4 wheeler in a busy intersection; scant regard for the stop line and racing fearlessly before the signal turns green.
4. the need to ride in the middle of the road is a great attraction for a few : most of these are beginners or women who have been taught that it is safe to be in the middle rather than on the left side. Some stick to the right side without reason and compete with the 4 wheelers for right of way !!
5. Parking happily in a no parking zone and often in a disorderly way: hindering cars, scratching the neighboring vehicles and providing no pathway for the poor pedestrians.

All these and more is a way of the 2 wheeler's life considered normal by many and advantageous rather than risky !!

Thumbs up

Jay....Our traffic authorities are very much responsible for such type of careless riding and driving b'coz they are not implementing traffic rules strictly...and we (drivers and riders) always try to reach our destination ASAP without caring about our life (by not obeying manners on road) and traffic rules.....

actually most of them are inspired by movies like Dhoom and launching of newly stylish and racer bikes in our country almost every month also encourage the teenagers to drive recklessly. They forget that they are on roads not on race tracks.

A friend of mine was waiting at the Spencers signal and there comes this two wheeler at break neck speed with two youngsters on it thinking they can brake at the last moment. Just then an auto moved in the way and to avoid it they bent a little and went past my friend's car in such a way that their handle bar broke one rear light and gave a long, deep scratch on the side. Of course they fell at the zebra crossing and suffered injuries. Seeing their injuries my friend sympathised. Result. A bill for more than 10000/- from his repair shop.
