| Delhi The capital, seat of political power, the satta game! Republic and Independence day parades. Golgappes. Punjabi Dhaba khana! Chandni Chowk, 10 Janpath! Cheap affordable housing. HOT SCORCHING summers, COLD CHILLING winters. Pollution. Not very friendly neighbors, Chai in earthern pots! Ambassadors (cars here!). Black Cats! Sonia Gandhi! Road Rage, Traffic Jams, but how good is the traffic sense here? |

Want directions? Stop and ask, it’s much easier
Want directions? Stop and ask, it’s much easier SCORES OF overhead road signs put up by the Public Works Department (PWD) on key roads of the city are missing. The blue-colour signboards visible to motorists at night first came up in Delhi more than a decade ago and can be seen on most major roads maintained by the PWD and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. However, on many important roads and at intersections of the city, these signboards are missing. “When you approach the DND flyway from Ashram side, half of the huge blue signboard is missing. Most people who have to go towards Sarai Kale Khan take the toll bridge instead,” said Avdesh Kumar, a banker living in Maharani Bagh. “As it is, these signboards are not very helpful as all their arrows point southwards instead of showing left or right directions,” he said. “Ideally, there should be a single authority for road signages in Delhi. Now different civic agencies put up their own boards and these are not uniform,” said a senior PWD official on condition of anonymity. “The retro-reflective signages are made using the best technology, used all over the world, reflecting a vehicle’s headlight instead of absorbing it in the dark,” he said. “These boards sometimes go missing because of the costly metal used in them. Sometimes, bad maintenance also means the signages go missing,” he said. As one moves ahead from Ashram towards Sarai Kale Khan, more such bare signposts can be seen where the boards have gone missing. A part of a signage showing Pragati Maidan is missing on a board near Sarai Kale Khan. Similar boards can be seen at the Laxmi Nagar intersection, Andrews Ganj and Mayur Vihar Phase-I. Engineer-in-chief of PWD R. Subramanian said he would be able to comment only after he inspected the missing boards. ![]() Vikas Marg ![]() DND Toll Bridge What do you think about missing and damaged signboards that are supposed to make things easier for road-users? signs? what signs?
I have driven thousands of kms in India. I must admit what frustrates me most on the main highways is the signs. When roads have been repaired the signs are not replaced. they are lying flat on the ground somewhere, now that is because the people who repair do not drive. Then there are those who want to advertise over the sign. The situaton is desperate. Roads should have clear road signs at places where motorists can find them. Penalise that polictcal party that covers up a sign. More road signs please if you want tourists to drive and visit the great country.
