Delhi
The capital, seat of political power, the satta game! Republic and Independence day parades. Golgappes. Punjabi Dhaba khana! Chandni Chowk, 10 Janpath! Cheap affordable housing. HOT SCORCHING summers, COLD CHILLING winters. Pollution. Not very friendly neighbors, Chai in earthern pots! Ambassadors (cars here!). Black Cats! Sonia Gandhi! Road Rage, Traffic Jams, but how good is the traffic sense here?

Thumbs up Traffic police take the road less travelled

Traffic Police take the Road Less Travelled

Taking Cue From Munna Bhai, Cops To ‘Reward’ Violators This Week

This week, violating a traffic rule might get you a ‘gift’ rather than a challan. Delhi Traffic Police have decided to take the Gandhigiri route to set the violators right by embarrassing them. And those flouting the rules during the road safety week — January 1 to 7 — will be made to take a pledge to adhere to them.

Also, on one of the special education day this week, there will be no challans and violators shall be issued a violation slip with a pledge not to commit any traffic violation again. But this reprieve will last only for a day.

‘‘It is part of the national drive that is organised every year in the first week of January. It gets a huge response since Delhi is one of the cities with maximum vehicular traffic in India,’’ said joint commissioner of traffic police, Qamar Ahmed. Different days have been allotted to organise workshops on safe and defensive driving in various zones and districts.

The drive includes display of banners and exhibition vans, along with seven different drives like wearing helmets and seat belts, enforcing intersection discipline, lane driving, controlling pedestrian movements, enforcing bus stop discipline and regulation of slow-moving traffic.

‘‘While till last year, we use to give gifts to those who were found following the rules regularly. But this year we decided to give a twist to it and adopt a unique way of pulling up the violators. We did so on Monday in the south district and the violators were very ashamed,’’ said a senior traffic official of south district.

Free reflective tapes will also be fixed on cycles and a special workshop will be organised to discipline TSR drivers. From cyclists to truck drivers and school children to RWAs (residents’ welfare associations), all will be roped in to gain maximum response. Meeting of RWAs, traders and market associations will be organised to spread awareness.

‘‘Public address systems will be used to communicate to masses at red lights and literature will be distributed wherever possible. During peak hours, the staff that has been put on special duty for the purpose shall remain to clear road encroachment and implement free flow. Parking will be banned on arterial and primary roads. Traffic signals will also be synchronised,’’ said Ahmed.

He added: ‘‘Vehicles carrying goods will not be allowed to carry passengers and there will be strict adherence to load ceiling rules in order to curb overloading.’’

Like every year, this time also a painting competition will be organised to sensitise school children about traffic rules. The kids will also be made to visit traffic training parks during the week.

DON’T OVERSHOOT: If you cross the stop line this week, you may get a slip and be asked to pledge adherence to traffic rules

MIND YOUR LANE: There will be separate drives on lane driving and enforcing discipline at bus stops

Another special drive to teach Indians how to behave on roads. I think this 7 day drive is not essential enough to learn us about road manners.
