Delhi
The capital, seat of political power, the satta game! Republic and Independence day parades. Golgappes. Punjabi Dhaba khana! Chandni Chowk, 10 Janpath! Cheap affordable housing. HOT SCORCHING summers, COLD CHILLING winters. Pollution. Not very friendly neighbors, Chai in earthern pots! Ambassadors (cars here!). Black Cats! Sonia Gandhi! Road Rage, Traffic Jams, but how good is the traffic sense here?

Stay , but without your s

Stay , but without your s

IF YOU are buying a fancy wireless gadget only to speak on your while driving, forget it. Speaking on hand's-free while driving will not exempt you from paying a fine anymore. With traffic fines increasing by Rs. 500, the Delhi traffic police have made it clear that this act is totally prohibited. The fine for talking on the while driving stands at Rs.1500 now.

"Speaking on the while driving amounts to dangerous driving. Using hand's free is not allowed and people should refrain from talking on the while driving. It can distract the driver and lead to accidents. If motorists have to answer an emergency call, they can stop the vehicle at a side and speak," said Qamar Ahmed, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

According to traffic police records, this offence topped the list of all traffic violations last year It saw a 103.07 per cent increase in 2006.

However, the traffic police agreed that prosecuting drivers using wireless devices is not easy "In many instances, our staff miss out on violators talking on hand's free devices as it is a small gadget and many times, not visible," said a traffic police officer.

Traffic policemen said they have formed teams and have also deployed plainclothesmen to track people who use s while driving. "We have deployed our men at traffic intersections. As soon as we see someone talking on a , we inform our counterparts on the other end who stop the car and impose a penalty," said a senior traffic police officer.

Information regarding such violators will also be flashed on the wireless set of the traffic police and they will track down the offenders. Apart from this, Zonal Officers (ZO) will follow such violators on their motorcycles and penalise them.

Rohit Baluja, president, Institute of Road Traffic Education says, "This is something which is impossible to enforce. How can the police prove that a person was actually talking on the ? I don't know any country in the world that does not allow using hand's free. In UK it is recommended but it is not an offence since the police are convinced that enforcing it would be next to impossible," said Baluja.

Even motorists feel using hand's free should not be an offence as the driver's hands are free while driving. "I can't understand the problem with using a hand's free. If this a distraction then a driver should not be allowed to speak at all while driving," said Vijay Jayaraman, a engineer who had to pay Rs. 1500 when he was caught talking on a hand's free .

Policemen Swarm City

Traffic policemen were out in full force on Delhi roads to crack the whip on traffic violators. With the aim of adhering to the High Court order: the policemen booked owners of tinted cars, drivers talking on s while driving and other traffic violators.

One of the many traffic signals in the city that saw a high number of prosecutions. When this correspondent reached the spot around 4.30 p.m., the police had already prosecuted 40 violators. Staff posted at that point said most of the vi01ations included red light jumping, which means a fine of Rs. 600.

The police were quick to spot a car with tinted glasses and immediately asked the driver to stop. The lady driver pleaded innocence and said hers was a partially tinted glass. Quick came the reply from the officer, "Tinted glasses are not allowed, it doesn't matter if they are partially or completely tinted."

A traffic constable, equipped with a blade, quickly removed the film from the glass.

The only objective is to raise more revenue for the traffic department. Next of course you will have no smoking..(oh that's already there) and then maybe they will consider asking people to wear helmets in cars so that looks don't distract people. How about also banning radios and CD players etc.. as well? They are also a distraction.

Revenue is ok but strict traffic rules is mandatory for us...If we violate traffic rules, we have to give large amount of traffic fines. As for as i am concern from bus and lorry drivers to cyclists, it's the duty of everyone to behave responsibly while using the road. So do not violate traffic rules at any circumstances.

Fine on using s and smoking while driving are very interesting topics to discus. Few of my friends say that if we stuck in traffic jams and wait atleast 2 or 3 minutes to move then what is wrong if we use in that stopping time period. I think nothing wrong in that case but just look at the people they use s while riding on 2 wheelers and driving a 4 wheeler with fast speed. Is it ok? Friend rules remains same in every circumstances whether u r stuck in traffic jam or moving smoothly.
