Delhi
The capital, seat of political power, the satta game! Republic and Independence day parades. Golgappes. Punjabi Dhaba khana! Chandni Chowk, 10 Janpath! Cheap affordable housing. HOT SCORCHING summers, COLD CHILLING winters. Pollution. Not very friendly neighbors, Chai in earthern pots! Ambassadors (cars here!). Black Cats! Sonia Gandhi! Road Rage, Traffic Jams, but how good is the traffic sense here?

Road Caves in Near Siri Fort Lucky Escape for Motorists

A ROAD near the Siri Fort Auditorium caved in on Wednesday (6Dec'06). Two vehicles fell into the huge crevice left by the cave-in at 3.30 p.m. Two people were injured in the incident.

A Maruti van was the first to fall into the pit followed by a Toyota Innova.

The driver of the Maruti car did not suffer any injuries. There were no passengers in it. The driver of the Toyota car and a passenger travelling in it suffered minor injuries.

Traffic police had to call in cranes to pull out the trapped vehicles. The road, which connects the Asiad village with August Kranti Marg, runs over a drain.

The police blamed the Public Works Department, which had dug the road recently, for the cave-in. After carrying out underground repairs, the civic agency covered the pit it had dug with loose mud.

“Officials who oversaw the road’s construction will be questioned. Also other factors that could have led to the cave-in would be looked into. People will be charged only after the investigation is complete,” said Anil Shukla, Deputy Commissioner of Police, south.

DEEP IMPACT

The road near the Siri Fort auditorium (above) caved in around 3.30 p.m. Two cars (a Maruti van, left, and a Toyota Innova) were trapped in the crater formed due to the incident. There were, however, no casualties in either of the car. Moreover, the bylane is not very busy. Traffic police had to call in cranes to pull out the trapped vehicles.
