Delhi
The capital, seat of political power, the satta game! Republic and Independence day parades. Golgappes. Punjabi Dhaba khana! Chandni Chowk, 10 Janpath! Cheap affordable housing. HOT SCORCHING summers, COLD CHILLING winters. Pollution. Not very friendly neighbors, Chai in earthern pots! Ambassadors (cars here!). Black Cats! Sonia Gandhi! Road Rage, Traffic Jams, but how good is the traffic sense here?

Thumbs up Moolchand Underpass opens for Trial run

The much-awaited Moolchand underpass, ready two months before the deadline, was thrown open to traffic on Monday for a trial run.

The 422 m-long underpass, built at a cost of Rs 38 crore, would not only help smoothen traffic on the busy Ring Road but also the traffic coming from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg and Joseph Broz Tito Marg and merging with the Ring Road traffic.

The underpass has two 9.15 m-wide carriageways with three lanes each and a 1.2 m-wide central median, which would have plantation. The underpass would be covered above by a 72 m-long span. Vehicles trying to take the right turn would use the span. Traffic coming from Ashram side and going towards Lala Lajpat Rai Marg would halt at a traffic signal and then turn right over the span. Similarly traffic from AIIMS side would use the span to turn towards Joseph Broz Tito Marg.

During the trial run the underpass would be open for the public from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be closed at night so that work on the overhead fittings and walls could be carried out.

The much-awaited Moolchand underpass
Yesterday I was there around 6:15 PM (This underpass was still open for trial run) but I found a huge traffic jam there. I felt that what will be the benefit of this underpass in upcoming time if that area will remain chaos with huge traffic after proper opening of this underpass.

No Easy Passage at Moolchand

No Easy Passage at Moolchand

Underpass Open But Traffic Headed Right Travels To Lajpat Ngr And Takes U-Turn
The underpass at south Delhi’s Moolchand crossing has been open for traffic for over a month now. But this has brought little relief to scores of motorists wanting to take right turns at the intersection as the signal at the surface-level crossing is yet to be opened.

STILL WAITING: The month-old underpass has brought little relief to commuters wanting to take a right turn at the intersection

A traffic study conducted when the underpass was being commissioned revealed that the volume of traffic moving straight on the Ring Road and turning right towards Chirag Dilli from AIIMS side is the maximum. While one lot was tackled by the underpass, the right-turning traffic is eagerly awaiting the opening of the turns. ‘‘The underpass is of no help to me as I still have to go to Lajpat Nagar to take a Uturn and get onto J B Tito Marg. I wonder when the right turn at Moolchand will be reopened,’’ said Kusum Khanna, a resident of Greater Kailash II, who crosses Moolchand everyday on the way back from office in Bhikaji Cama Place.

Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) officials, who are looking after the project, say that the turns will be opened by this month end — traffic signals have already been put up and the road is being carpeted. ‘‘By this month end, the crossing at grade will also be ready and commuters will be able to take right turns from all the arms of the intersection. The underpass will be complete well before its December deadline,’’ a senior DTTDC official said. The signages and pedestrian paths will be in place by then.

As reported by Times City on August 25, 2006, the commissioning of the six-lane underpass will make movement of vehicles signal free on Ring Road at Moolchand. All the right turns, which have been closed since the construction commenced, will also be reopened as the crossing at the surface level is being signalised.

Three lane service roads have been created on either side of the underpass on Ring Road, to be used by right-turning traffic and heavy vehicles like trucks and buses, which will not be allowed to use the underpass.

Most road decongestion projects in the recent past have been nightmares in so far as pedestrian facilities are concerned. But at Moolchand, an elliptical pedestrian route has been incorporated into the design of the crossing. To facilitate movement of people crossing the road, all left turns will be signalised. Two walkways are also being constructed at the openings of the underpass on either side for persons wanting to cross Ring Road.

The entire area will be landscaped. Even inside the underpass, multi-coloured reflector strips are being put on the walls, which will shine like stars at night.
