Delhi
The capital, seat of political power, the satta game! Republic and Independence day parades. Golgappes. Punjabi Dhaba khana! Chandni Chowk, 10 Janpath! Cheap affordable housing. HOT SCORCHING summers, COLD CHILLING winters. Pollution. Not very friendly neighbors, Chai in earthern pots! Ambassadors (cars here!). Black Cats! Sonia Gandhi! Road Rage, Traffic Jams, but how good is the traffic sense here?

Killer Highway

25 crashes already this year on NH-1

THE NATIONAL Highway 1, the main link between Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, is now turning out to be a death trap. Between January and February this year, a 22-kilometre stretch on the highway from Wazirabad in north-west Delhi to the Shingu border - has witnessed 25 fatal accidents. The toll was nine in the corresponding period last year In all, 107 fatal accidents took place on the highway last yeal: and this year, the graph is already worrisome.

Authorities say poor lighting and non-segregation of the slowmoving and fast-moving traffic are the main reasons for the rise in accidents. "More than half the (22 km) stretch does not have proper lighting. Lighting is provided only up to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar The highway has no facilities for pedestrians. Nearly 50 per cent of the victims are either pedestrians or two-wheeler riders,".

There are two blind spots on the 22-km stretch which witness many accidents, some even go unreported. "The Libaspur-Swaroop Nagar and the Khera Khurd-Nanglipoona crossings are accidentprone since the road is narrow there. There's no lighting near these two spots, making them accident-prone areas,". The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has washed its hands of the whole issue. It says that the responsibility to ensure proper lighting on the highway rests with the civic authorities.

The villagers living near the highway are often victims of the fast-moving traffic.
