E-eye to Check Illegal Parking In yet another attempt to tackle the problem of unauthorised parking, the MCD has roped in the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) to create a GIS mapbased parking management system. Stage One would involve a survey and generation of base maps for the 330 authorised parking lots showing the details of the parking, surrounding land use and access to the area from the main road. In what can be labelled as a people-friendly move, a webbased system has also been proposed which would provide the detailed information of locations of different parking lots, capacity, key map, fares structure and parking service duration. This information can be accessed by any user through the internet. The proposal to get SPA to create the parking management system will soon be placed before the MCD standing committee for approval. Meanwhile, a presentation on the parking management system will be made before the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) chairman Bhure Lal on Monday. The move to put in place a centrally monitored parking management system follows the repeated directives from the EPCA to streamline the parking. According to MCD officials, the first step in this regard is already underway as the MCD is busy demarcating the boundary of the 130 existing authorised parking lots. A yellow line will outline all these parking spaces to define the boundary and any vehicle parked outside that will be in the unauthorised zone. Even the traffic police has been informed about the same so that on-the-spot enforcement is possible. The next step would involve creating base maps using satellite imagery to define and regulate the parking system. It is here that the MCD is planning to take the assistance of SPA. According to the presentation made by SPA’s transport department on the parking system, stage one of the plan, would involve preparing base maps of 130 existing parking lots which would then extend to the newly allotted ones taking the total to 330. Presently, no scaled parking layout maps are available with MCD. A central monitoring system is also proposed wherein the MCD will use GIS maps in conjunction with electronic metres placed in at parking lots to check any unauthorised parking.
