Delhi
The capital, seat of political power, the satta game! Republic and Independence day parades. Golgappes. Punjabi Dhaba khana! Chandni Chowk, 10 Janpath! Cheap affordable housing. HOT SCORCHING summers, COLD CHILLING winters. Pollution. Not very friendly neighbors, Chai in earthern pots! Ambassadors (cars here!). Black Cats! Sonia Gandhi! Road Rage, Traffic Jams, but how good is the traffic sense here?

Delhiites Ride On Eco-friendly Wave

DELHIITES RIDE ON ECO-FRIENDLY WAVE

Tracking The Growth
A Indraprastha Gas Limited survey shows that Delhiites are increasingly using CNG - mostly used in public transport - in their cars. A look at the percentage increase in cars running on CNG.

Why Delhi Is Switching Over To CNG
Study shows CNG can cut your fuel expense by 70%. If you run your car on this fuel for a year, you can recover the cost of CNG kit installation through fuel saving. A look at cost of running a car on different fuels.

Converting To CNG
More CNG variant models are available now. But if you want to convert, here’s what you should know:
  • Transport department of Delhi government has authorised a few manufacturers and importers to retrofit
  • Go to a registered and govt-approved manufacturer. List of suppliers on web
  • CNG kit price varies between Rs 35,000 and Rs 50,000
  • For convenience, keep both the options of CNG and petrol. You can shift from petrol to CNG or vice versa just with a flick of a button on your dashboard
  • All spark-ignited engines can be converted to CNG by installing a conversion kit which has a cylinder

Now, CNG Powers City’s Fancy Cars Too

82% Rise In Private Luxury Cars Running On The Green Fuel Over Past Year: Survey

Delhiites might be driving swanky luxury cars but they are also trying to cut down on fuel costs. A recent survey reveals that in just one year the number of CNG-run private cars has increased by 82% and the maximum increase has been seen in the luxury car segment.

The survey, conducted by Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), shows that the number of private cars running on CNG has increased from 19,351 in July 2005 to 35,229 till July this year. Rough estimates show that this number could have reached 40,000 till the last week of November. The maximum increase has been in the luxury segment. With more car manufacturers introducing CNG variants, this trend is likely to continue.

The maximum increase has been in Opel Corsa. From a small number of 16 in July 2005, it has grown to 316 cars running on CNG.

Similarly, Hyundai Accents have grown from 187 to 1,300 in the same period, which is a jump of 595%. The model which has the maximum number of CNG-run vehicles is Maruti Omnis or vans, the first one to convert to CNG.

There are 5,796 Omnis as compared to 4,661 last year. There are 5,032 Maruti Esteems and 4,350 Maruti 800 in the capitals.

All the car models running on CNG are showing a bullish trend.

The percentage share of CNG-run vehicles in the total number of private cars in Delhi is increasing.

IGL managing director Om Narayan said: ‘‘CNG is no longer being considered as a fuel meant for public transport. The number of cars, especially luxury cars, running on CNG are increasing at a phenomenal pace.”

He said: “This is because of the saving one can do by switching to CNG. Seeing this rise in demand, we are planning to add at least 15 new stations by March 2008. We have already applied for permission to DDA, MCD and Land and Development Office (L&DO) for taking 39 plots of land for setting up new stations.’’

A look at fuel cost saving reveals why Delhiites are switching to CNG. A car run on CNG can save 69.20% per kilometre as compared to a petrol-run car.

Simply put, if CNG costs 92 paise per kilometre, petrol costs Rs 2.99 per kilometre. If run on auto LPG, the same car would give a cost per kilometre of Rs 1.88. This still makes CNG a better option.
