What do you think usually while driving?

Drivers think of rather than signals

SIDETRACKED: One in five drivers admit to concentrating behind the wheel less than 75 per cent of the time.

London: Over a million motorists think about rather than the road ahead and millions more who don't indulge in intimate thoughts are worrying about work or thinking about their families, a survey said on Thursday.

Research from car insurer More Than found one in five drivers admit to concentrating behind the wheel less than 75 per cent of the time, with 1.2 million thinking mostly about .

And wasn't the only non-traffic thoughts motorists have. For 3.2 million drivers work was the main focus and for two million more it was family issues that dominated.

"Unsafe habits can be unlearned just as easily as they can be learned, but first, drivers must recognise the risk they face by not concentrating on their driving," said Lisa Dorn, Director of Driver Research at Cranfield University of the findings.

The study also revealed drivers' pet hates.

Topping the list were tailgaters (28 per cent), lane hoggers (20 per cent) and drivers who cut in (11 per cent).

Other road users who drove too fast and those who drove too slowly were also rated on 11 per cent.

The research carried out by Sky Living for More Than questioned 4,497 adults in June, 2006.

You have to press the brake, then clutch. change gear and throttle away if you want to move. In bike these are performed by all the limbs individually. In car acceleration and braking is done normally by the right foot while left foot takes care of the clutch and the hands take care of the steering wheel, horn, lights, wiper, etc. For a person new to driving these may look mind boggling. But to a regular user these are reflexive actions. It is safe to say that for the first few days 'you' drive the vehicle;after which the 'vehicle' drives you! Thst's when you start thinking of other things. For me the diversion is any rule violations, of course, and some times nothing! Yes. I go blank, totally. I won't know where I am, why, what , nothing! So whenever I am diverted or go blank I just look ahead and take one vehicle at a time consciously like a new driver and get back on track. The key is 'being conscious of what you are doing'. Not just in traffic but anything in life.
