Unhappy Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway claims 3 more lives

Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway claims 3 more lives

GURGAON: The Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway claimed three more lives on Saturday morning when a car with three MBA students rammed into a truck at Shankar Chowk. Two first-year students of Amity University, Namaan Sharma and Gagandeep Singh, both 22, were killed while Singh's cousin, Gurmeet, 24, is in a critical state. The three were returning from Gurgaon to their homes in Noida.

Friends said the students had gone to Gurgaon for dinner but later headed for Nizamuddin. They reached Shankar Chowk flyover around 2.30am and were hardly a kilometre from the toll plaza when the driver of the truck in front of the car, a Skoda, suddenly applied brakes.

The impact of the collision was such that the car was crushed like a tin can. The front side of the metallic brown Skoda went completely beneath the rear side of the truck and got stuck. Namaan was driving the car, Gagandeep was sitting in the front with Gurmeet on the back seat, according to the cops.

"We are yet to record Gurmeet's statement, but he told us that the truck suddenly applied brakes and Namaan who was driving the car had no time to react," said the investigating officer. Gurmeet sustained multiple fractures and severe injury to the liver, doctors said.

Friends and family members of the MBA students, who were killed in a road mishap on Saturday morning on Gurgaon expressway, gathered outside Paras Hospital to claim the bodies of the two victims. Namaan Sharma and Gagandeep Singh, both 22, were staying in Sector 82 of Noida. Singh's cousin, Gurmeet, 24, along with a friend, Gautam Choudhary, his batchmate from KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research in Mumbai, had come to Delhi a few months back and was to join an MNC. "Gurmeet and I were to join on this 15th. I got to know about the accident at 6 am," said Choudhary.

"Gurmeet was conscious when he was brought to the hospital but was badly injured. He has suffered serious facial injuries and has multiple fractures. Due to the blunt abdominal trauma there is laceration of the liver and spleen. We are monitoring his liver which is severely injured. We have to wait for 24 hours before we say anything about his condition," said Dr Viprashree, senior gastrointestinal surgeon, who is looking after Gurmeet.

It was Gurmeet who made a call to his father, Col (Retd) Balwant Singh in Raipur, Chattisgarh, from the accident spot. "We got a call around 2.45 am or 3 am. But all he (Gurmeet) could say was ‘We have met with an accident...papa police has come' and the got disconnected. I got really worried and tried his number but it was switched off. I then informed Gagandeep's father, AS Gill, about the accident," said Col Balwant Singh.

Gill then called his son but there was no answer. "At 4 am, a doctor picked up the and informed us that our sons had met with an accident and were critical," said Gill.

Some of Namaan's friend informed his father, who was in Indore on a business trip, about the accident. Their families, all from Raipur in Chattisgarh, reached Gurgaon on Saturday morning. "After talking to Namaan's friend, I spoke to the doctors at the hospital. I knew he was no more," said Subhash Sharma, Namaan's father. SHO, Udyog Vihar Phase-1 police station, Udai Raj, said: "We are investigating the accident and have impounded the truck. We are just waiting for the doctors to allow us to record Gurmeet's statement. At present, we can't say what led to the accident but we are looking into all angles. We have recovered three empty beer bottles from the car but we can't say anything till we get Namaan's postmortem report."
