78 people Died on Delhi Gurgaon Expressway in 2008
GURGAON: Two people were killed in separate mishaps on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on Saturday night. Another person was seriously injured in one of the incidents.
According to police officials, around 10 pm on Saturday, the highway patrolling squad found a body on the median of the expressway near Atlas Chowk. The victim was later identified as Jagdish Rameshwar Rao, 27, a engineer in an MNC.
Police officials said the victim was in a rickshaw when it was hit by a dumper. Rickshaws are not allowed on the expressway, and the accident once again highlights the lax enforcement of rules on the stretch. The rickshaw-puller was grievously injured and remains in a critical state at Safdarjung Hospital. Rao came from Andhra Pradesh and lived alone. His parents later arrived from Hyderabad to take his body back home.
The police have arrested the dumper driver.
In another incident, Dayachand Verma, 52, was run over by an unknown vehicle on Saturday midnight near IFFCO Chowk. Police said the victim had just got down from a cab near IFFCO Chowk when he was hit.
The victim worked as a manager in a firm at Khandsa Road, and was suspected to have been inebriated when the accident occurred. Police said he called his brother shortly before his death to say that he was depressed.
In 2008, the death toll on the expressway stood at 78. It is already six this year.
