What’s the one greatest folly of the great Indian dream? It’s the shabby road safety in India. The road rage in India is so prominent in every walk of life that even the traffic authorities in India are slowly giving a cold shoulder to the menace. Traffic safety in India is not a priority but development is. How pertinent can development be without adequate safety features in the Indian road traffic? It’s anybody’s guess.

If you go to a big city like Mumbai, traffic is a little organized than say Delhi traffic. Further south, the Bangalore traffic and Chennai traffic resembles chaos and haphazardness. This is because, we are brought up in an environment where giving two hoots to the laws is considered flashy. The respect for human life is not ingrained in the Indian road users.

Driving in the wrong lanes, jumping traffic signals, turning without indication, overtaking from the wrong side, drunk while driving, chatting on the while driving, lane violations and over speeding, more often than not, won’t land you in trouble. Following zebra line rules are alien to Indian drivers. Right of way is an illusory concept amidst the great Indian road rage.

Where lies the solution to this eternal enigma? The solution lies in the will to accept a positive change in our lives. The kids in school must be made to undergo compulsory training in observing traffic rules. The parents, on their part, must not only teach but also act as a role model to their kids. The traffic authorities in India need to show the will to make a change. They would have to rise above the parochial monetary benefits and work towards the greater good for all. And most importantly, the respect for fellow human beings that is sorely missing in Indian attitude on road must be brought back to give a pleasurable driving experience for all.
