Road and vehicle mismatch
On the Indian road traffic front, however, traffic authorities in India have a long way to go before they can upgrade the road safety standards in India. The condition of traffic safety in India can be gauged from the fact that there is an accidental death on the roads every 6.5 minutes.
The country’s vehicle population is over 5.5 crore and growing at a phenomenal rate of 25 lakh every year but the road infrastructure lags far behind in most cities and towns. A cursory look at Mumbai and Bangalore traffic will reveal that the roads in most areas of these metropolitan cities are crumbling under the weight of the increasing number of vehicles. This has made the daily commute a time consuming, stressful chore for office-goers, businessmen and students alike. Delhi and Chennai traffic scene is only marginally better with drivers clamoring for every inch of space during rush hours. |
