In Delhi Trade fair, Hu choke roads MOTORISTS HAD a tough time on Tuesday as Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit and the trade fair rush near Pragati Maidan resulted in traffic snarls in many parts of the city. ![]() Traffic Jam Near ITO In all the areas the Chinese president visited, traffic had to be stopped for at least 10 minutes. “Even if traffic is stopped for a few minutes during the peak hours it results in bottlenecks. But we do our best to regulate traffic,” said Qamar Ahmed, Joint Commissioner, Traffic. According to the traffic police, New Delhi and Central Delhi were the worst affected as Hu visited Rashtrapati Bhavan, Rajghat and Hyderabad House. Traffic was disrupted on Ring Road near Rajghat, IP Marg, Tilak Marg and Shah Jahan Road near the Hotel Taj Man Singh. To add to the traffic woes, Tibetan protesters had gathered on Shah Jahan Road. As a result, one carriageway was blocked on the road and traffic movement came to a standstill. In New Delhi near Pragati Maidan the situation worsened as diversions from the president's VIP route coincided with the rush for trade fair. “I thought it would be better to visit the trade fair during business hours as the rush is less. But today there was a traffic jam near Pragati Maidan,” said Rakesh Bhargava, a brass exporter. The Chinese president’s movement coincided with the peak-hour rush throwing city traffic out of gear. Hu reached Rashtrapati Bhavan at 9.45 a.m. and then left for Rajghat at around 10.15 a.m. The office-goers had to face a lot of inconvenience in the morning as traffic was first held up near India Gate and then at the ITO crossing and Ring Road as Hu’s ‘carcade’ moved towards Rajghat. The president had to reach Hyderabad House at 11 a.m., so the motorists on the entire route from Rajghat to Hyderabad were left stranded. The stoppage time at the already-busy Ring Road and Vikas Marg was 20-30 minutes. Traffic was also disrupted in many parts of south Delhi as the president's wife visited Qutab Minar. Between 3 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. there was heavy congestion near Mehrauli as traffic was stooped in the area for her smooth visit to the historical monument. Such activities happen often in our cities but our leaders and responsible authorities never care about person those are not the part of such activities and getting late to reach their desired destinations due to traffic jam caused by these activities.
The most unfortunate thing is that nobody can totally ban these activities.

Hu’s gone, but Traffic Jams Stay Thanks to Rallies (In Delhi) ![]() HELD TO RANSOM: Traffic grinds to a halt on Vikas Marg on Wednesday. Similar scenes were seen across the city as BJP took out a protest march A day after the Chinese president’s visit to the city threw traffic out of gear, people once again found themselves caught in traffic jams in central Delhi. And this time there was no Chinese hand. A massive rally organised by BJP on the first day of the Parliament session, coupled with two smaller ones by Samajwadi Party and School Teachers’ Federation of India, led to massive jams across central Delhi. Marching to Jantar Mantar from Rajghat and Mandir Marg were 40,000 protesters who stalled the traffic. Heavy pedestrian movement and increased traffic in the area because of the India International Trade Fair made matters worse for the traffic police. Hapless officers could be seen trying to keep the traffic moving with diversions, achieving little. The worst-affected areas included Ring Road around Rajghat, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Ranjit Singh flyover, Tolstoy Marg, Sansad Marg, Ashoka Road, GPO roundabout, Mandir Marg, Connaught Place, Barakhamba Road, K G Marg, ITO, Tilak Marg, Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, Talkatora Road, Shankar Road, Mathura Road, IP Marg, Vikas Marg and ITO bridge. BJP rally main culprit New Delhi: Traffic in central Delhi was severely affected on Wednesday. The major cause of the disruption was the BJP rally for which about 30,000 people started converging at Rajghat and Mandir Marg from about 10 am. They then marched to the protest venue at Jantar Mantar holding the city to ransom as an entire carriageway and all the cross roads remained closed till the procession passed through JLN Marg, Ranjit Flyover and Tolstoy Marg. In all, there were 14 demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. Around 3 pm, when the crowd dispersed, there was heavy movement of people, adding to the congestion. As JCP (traffic), Qamar Ahmed, explained: ‘‘For the BJP rally, a large number of buses had come in from neighbouring states, for which we had to create parking space. In addition, there were hordes of people on the road. Source: http://epaper.timesofindia.com (Delhi Edition) Date Of Publish: 23-Nov-06
