Driving by minors, a major problem
Driving By Minors, A Major Problem Delhi: In an recent incident on Sunday (28Jan'07) morning when a 17year old driving a car allegedly injured nine people in Tilak Marg area. The incident took place around 4.30 am when he reportedly rammed his speeding Toyota Innova into a Tata Sumo ferrying labourers. The Innova car is registered in the name of a senior naval officer. THE POLICE have not made any arrests. The incident yet again highlights the perils that pedestrians and vehicle users face every day on account of rash and negligent driving by underage boys. According to the Delhi Traffic Police there has been a 26.74 per cent increase in instances of underage boys driving cars. Experts say the problem lies with the remarkably low traffic fines and lenient traffic rules. One other problem is the attitude of parents who do not think twice before giving car keys to their children. The maximum fine for underage driving is only Rs 1,000. There have been several instances where several school students have been booked for driving. As it is a bailable offence, the lawbreakers are let off after paying a meagre amount. "The fine is very low. A proposal is underway in Parliament to increase the fine so people become more responsible," said DP Verma, deputy commissioner of police, traffic (New Delhi). In 2006, the number of challans for underage driving was 2693 while in 2005, the figure stood at 2125. "Parents do not think twice before handing over the car to their children. Parents of such children should be punished for such acts," said Sameer Parekh, a leading psychiatrist. Source: http://epaper.hindustantimes.com (Delhi Edition) Date Of Publish: 30-Jan-07

It is very serious issue. If any underage person found drive recklessly than his or her parents are also responsible for that. By giving the keys of cars to their kids they create the danger in the life of not only their kids as well as other road users.

Lots of students those are not eligible for driving (due to underage) using bikes to go to school. You can see such crazy students everywhere. Intresting thing is that school administration also doesn’t care about them.

It is very sad that whenever there is an instance of the child driving without a license occur the parents are repeatedly called by police. Unfortunately some parents do not come. Some of them perhaps are not even interested. Their attitude towards the kids is… go to a 5 star hotel or to a discotheque and do what you like.
