20 Pilgrims die in India Road Crash

Pilgrims die in India road crash

At least 20 people were killed when a truck crowded with pilgrims overturned in the northern Indian state of Punjab, police said.

The accident took place late Monday night when the driver lost control of the vehicle near Jhajjar village, in Anandpur Sahib district.

Police said the truck was overcrowded. At least 60 people were injured.

The pilgrims, including both Hindus and Sikhs, were on their way to a remote temple in the Himalayan foothills.

Road accidents are common in India and claim thousands of lives every year.

Most accidents are caused by reckless driving, old vehicles and poorly maintained roads.
