![]() SPACE CRUNCH This is the scene at Cambridge Layout, Ulsoor, where vendors have occupied the pavement leaving no space for pedestrians. The footpath is a newly laid one and is certain to get damaged by such encroachments. Wot says?? Photo Source: http://epaper.timesofindia.com (Bangalore Edition) Date Of Publish: 10-Nov-06

The municipal authority and cops (Both Traffic and Civil) should handle such issues but no one can take any action against such vendors because an unofficial monthly fee (It might be daily or weekly) is paid by these vendors to responsible person in municipality office as well as in respective police station. This scene was reported in the TOI recently and the next day TOI reported with a photo that BMP had taken action and cleared the footpath.
TOI has been doing a good job recently of publishing photos of neglect by the BMP/BDA/BWSSB and they seem to be taking action on the basis of these reports. Well, if that is the way to go, fine.. Hats off to TOI for taking the initiative. The common man has no voice in Bangalore, nay, India. If this way works, so be it. Recently, a new cement foot path was laid on Cambridge Road, next to St. Meera School. Though the initiative is laudable, the work accomplished, as usual, is shoddy and un-scientific. Rain water never used to stagnate on this road before. After the new footpath, which left no way for water to drain into the gutter beneath, recent rains saw huge puddles forming at the intersections causing a lot of inconvenience. Last Saturday, some blokes with crow-bars came and started breaking up the cement, presumably to create gaps for water to flow through. Again it has been left half done, with debris all over the foot path. Why can they not plan and do a proper job? Why can't they complete the work, even if taken up later, so that there is less inconvenience to public? When will our civic authorities and workers ever learn???
