Smile Traffic problems are everybody's problems

I found this blog entry about Bangalore’s BPO/Cab drivers which is very intresting….

  3. Its easier to catch the drivers and take them to task. If enough people do that, these drivers might just start refusing to work crazy shifts. Though this might be easier said than done.
  4. I've seen these drivers break every single rule in the book, from wrong U turns, to weaving in and out of traffic, honking from behind, driving with their headlights on full beam, overtaking from the left, using intimidation tactics to cut into one's lane, etc. I cannot believe all this is because of bad working conditions. I don't buy that argument. And time and time again, I've seen these guys violently arguing with traffic policemen and getting away with it.
  5. Do an experiment next time. Drive normally, follow traffic rules, measure how much time it takes. After than, in the same traffic conditions, drive rashly. Do all the things that drivers do. Measure the time. You will take at most 5 mins less in the latter case. Your blood pressure will be higher, you will suffer from road rage, you will be panting and harassed and, of course, you would have caused great annoyance to others. All at the cost of reaching 5 minutes earlier. is it worth it?
  6. Why do we have traffic rules? In any civilized country that follows some semblance of traffic rules, the public good is greater than individual good. So while each individual person might take 5 mins more or less, society as a whole will be more productive and efficient. This is well understood by people, or enforced by the police. When will this understanding come to Indians? By following traffic rules, you make traffic flow smoothly, without snarls and thus everybody benefits.

Another one e.g. of "The Responsible Corporate"s ...how BPO driver suspended for rash driving.

I could not do much at that moment, noted down the registeration number and followed the cab. Landed up in a BPO compny near ITPL, The security did not allow me in. I talked to the head of admin department, he invited me in. He requested me to give a written complaint, i did. Within 10 mins he showed me a letter, which was suspension order for cab driver.

Surprising, isn't it? But sometimes pursuasion pays off(stating this with hope that he really gets suspended! planning to check it tomorrow. I lost around 40 mins in all these, but at the end of it i am satisfied

If corporate companies will behave like this then certainly problem of rash driving will solve in metros very much.

Priyanka I agree with you if cab administrators will behave in such a fashion then rash driving problem can be sort out very much because mostly BPO and Office cab drivers are very much responsible for driving dangerously.

Here in Delhi mostly blue line bus drivers and cab drivers are mainly responsible for drive rashly as well as dangerously and both are caused most of the accidents. I saw a sticker on few cabs with matter “Drive rashly then call “ Number”) but I never called on that ever but now I am thinking about to try that number.

Ultimately, there is a need for greater and better understanding at all levels regarding the importance of adherence to the traffic rules in India.

Cool

Nobody cares for traffic rules in India. Talk about ‘human error’ is totally ridiculous; At first people need the strict fines, seizure by the government of licenses etc. At a zebra crossing which said: Don’t walk and don’t stand but who cares.... like traffic in Bangalore needs an engineering solution rather than a generic solution.

No wonder on bangalore’s unruly traffic. I understand the problem... the traffic is too disorderly and requires a lot of patience to ride or drive:-).

I assume that constructing wider roads will make traffic look better and traveling will be safer. Keeping the vehicles clean and checked will help. The market survey says that India is a focal point for small cars. Traveling by two wheelers is best i guess.

Why we always blame BPO and IT cab drivers for rash driving, I believe that cause for rash driving by BPO or IT drivers is to keep up with the time. The corporate admin put undue pressure to carry their flock of sheep to the workplace on time to increase productivity.

Cab staff also contribute indirectly in rash driving by reaching late on their pickup points.

This trickles down to drivers who despite the poor infrastructure bear the brunt of negotiating it on a daily basis. A driver who earns 5K - 6K month is stressed out. From a macro perspective this is the direct cause of poor infrastructure and lack of ground situation assesment by the Corporate Admin.

I totally agree with rider. It is the admin who puts pressure on the driver to keep up with the time. I have heard that the driver has to take a salary-cut if he is late on more than 2 or 3 occasions in a month. Given the poor infrastructure, what can the drivers do?

rider and kavita I agree with both of u but most of the cab drivers don’t take training from professional driving institutes and uneducated so they don’t fully aware about traffic rules and road safety issues. Such cab drivers deal rash driving as their favorite driving style.

The most irritating thing about cab drivers is they honk incessantly in traffic jams or on Red Lights. Jump Red Lights and Honk at you if you are ahead of them and are not jumping Red Lights. Rash driving by cab drivers also encourage others for rash driving.
