A white Indica cab/taxi ...moves from the right of the lane to the middle, suddenly the driver spots a gap between two cars on to the right. So he dives back again to the right and then at the signal takes a left turn...in turn blocking all the traffic behind him. I am writing from Bangalore but this I guess is a common sight in many cities. The truth is that there are a good number of taxis/cabs besides other cars in most cities. And these cab drivers make the roads a dangerous place+give the others an additional reason to increase the road rage. I feel the drivers who apply for license to drive cabs/taxis should go through a more rigourous driving test. They should be penalised heavily for driving rash. The notice stuck at the rear of company cabs have " If driver is found to drive rash contact ***********". By the time you note down the number the cab must have gone whizzing past you. The basic qualification of the drivers to whom the license is issued must be amended and followed strictly. |

Simple answer to your query Shubha...corruption. It is the root cause.
People can get a license without even going to the RTO. This has been the case since the 1970s and the repurcussions of this deep rooted evil of corruption is seen now, in the form of this madness on roads. Those days there were not even 10% of the number of vehicles you see now. The corruption should have been nipped in the bud then itself. Now, the monster is hydra headed and has got into the vitals. Wonder how things can change in India....??? Kranti, maha-kranti?? Rang de Basanti type of thing?? Who will be left alive after that, since the whole system is rotten?? Gives me sleepless nights, when I think of India's plight. All around us, countries in the middle east, far east who were far behind India in terms of development in the 60s have now leap frogged over us and are far far ahead. Visit www.skyscrapercity.com to see the photos of the highly impressive development of these places. China is miles ahead now. How can we think of Bengaluru or any other city in India today being of international standard?? We are only frogs in a well... Sorry for the rant, but I guess some steam has been let off....

Where we are after 50+ years of independence: Basic Facilities:Today in many parts of our country (in villages) there is no basic facilities like roads, schools, electricity etc. Lots of small cities of our country have these facilities but they can't say good from any standard b'coz electricity is available in these cities for few hours out of 24 hours; lack of teachers in schools, roads are full of potholes etc. Sports: How many medels we win in Olympic games and look at the China. Living standard: It is very unfortunate for us that a big part of our population resides on Footpaths, eat only once in a day, lots of children are not going to school due to their poverty and they are forced to work to earn some money for their families AND our government is trying to remove Child Labor from our country.."Is it possible?" Just think about our public transport...Trains and buses are overloaded with passengers. Above I mentioned only few problems but List is unlimited.... Our Progress areas: --->No Doubt we achieve number of milestones in the field of Technology, medical etc. --->We are continuously growing in copying others (Countries) in fashion, corruption, spiting on roads, violating law and order etc... About Our Road Traffic: Actually we (The Indians) are having lot of interest in purchasing new bikes and cars BUT we are not keen about behaving well on roads. Incidences of Road rages, road accidents, drunken driving, traffic violation are increasing in our country every day. I think.... Quote:

Where is the traffic police?
Who will catch these errant drivers? There is not enough traffic police personnel to catch the errant drivers. The only time when Bengaluru's traffic is regulated is when some VIP or VVIP is in town. Then you can see scores of 'humble' police constables lined up along the Airport road and other places and ensuring that nothing moves.

i agree completely with the entire situation. before issuing a license to a driver his capabilities have to be tested, before handing him the charge of risking a number of lives.

I think most of us not aware about lane rules. This happens with me a number of times, when I suppose to take U or right hand turn from a red light then I should stand in right lane (and I do the same) but every times numbers of vehicles those who want to go straight also follow my lane and that is wrong they should follow middle lane. The situation becomes very pathetic when light turns in to Green only for those who want to go straight not for those who want to take right hand turn and suddenly drivers of my lane who want to go straight starts honking the horns very badly to forced me to move and then they jump in running middle lane which cause traffic jam.

The problem is where do you start? Most of the officials who make the decisons dont drive. The people who repair and build the roads drive bicycles, or dont drive. How can you ever get some logic in the construction and design of roads. I worked with the officials of hyderabad and that is what I found was one of the reasons for poor quality. We need to get the officials to walk/cycle or drive their own vehicles to understand what the public are going through. The educated public need to take this very seriously to make a difference. The learning has to start right from the top and also in the schools. The middles will notice when the top and bottom are educated. It will happen. I am confident, especially when I see the comments of you all.
