The garden city, set dosa, the largest population Kannada speaking Tamils, Malleshwaram, MG, Kemp Fort, Software, no water, pubs, Vidhan Soudha, Vivesvaraya, spanking clean, sweet, relaxed, greatest weather. Techies who know the right rules to flirt. Silicon valley of India. But how MNCs, outsourcing and corporate culture is shaping the infrastructure of the city?

Ongoing Road Works

Road contractors are responsible for the safety of road users during on-going road works. Well illuminated signs are a MUST to warn drivers of works ahead, giving them enough time to slow down and drive cautiously.

Abroad, multi coloured ribbons are tied all along the stretches demarkating road works. During night time, battery operated strobe lights are kept to warn drivers. Traffic cones in orange are placed at least 50 metres ahead, warning drivers and also diverting traffic along with well lit signs in place well ahead.

The above are a must and if any contractor does not follow these guidelines, they are punished severely. This promotes an attitude of caring and discipline. The contractors also, of their own accord, put up road signs apologizing to road users for the temporary inconvenience.

Sounds very nice isn't it?

Is there any place in India where road works are in progress that the above are followed?? If yes, please educate me on them....

Yesterday, I was travelling from Devanahalli towards the city after sun set. A lovely six-lane stretch near the ITC factory, suddenly ends in a single track, undivided road (old road). Regular travellers are aware of this and usually take precautions.

Now, road works are in progress to widen the entire strech and the narrow stretch is a death trap with six foot deep trenches on either side. Very little warning signs or markers, except crudely painted wooden signs that cannot be read even during day time.

The inevitable accident had happened and I saw a mini-truck turned turtle in the ditch, just after the six-lane abruptly ended.

I was wondering how many were dead/injured because of this sheer negligence & stupidity of the contractors involved. This stretch is part of NHAI projects coming under the North-South corridor. Also, this road will serve as access to the up coming International Airport...

Wonder what our authorities are going to do?? Have they learnt any lessons? Do they care at all?

What can we as responsible citizens do about it? Any ideas??

DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT DISCIPLINE IS A HIGHWAY TO DISASTER!!!
