Road accidents reach a record number in the district.

TVM: Statistics of the past year shows an alarming number of accidents in the district. As per the figures available about 429 persons were killed and 3,749 grievously injured in 4,587 road accidents that occurred in the district last year.

The topper in road accidents during the year 2008 was the Ernakulam district. About 505 people lost their lives in various accidents. The death toll in Thiruvananthapuram district was 429 and Thrissur 414.

A notable discovery is that of the 4,587 road accidents that took place in 2008 in Thiruvananthapuram, 1,289 were night-time accidents. Ernakulam district topped the list in the case of night-time road accidents with 1,696 road accidents and Thrissur district recorded 1,269.

Experts are of the opinion that the sky rocketing trend in night time accidents are matter of serious concern and the govt. should undertake immediate measure to tackle the situation
