Panaji - Traffic restrictions on Zuari bridge for three days

The Zuari bridge will be closed for all vehicular traffic for three days from November 9 to 11, between 5 a.m. to 12 noon, as the Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi, will carry out load testing on it.

The bridge has been closed for heavy vehicular traffic since July this year after minor cracks were observed on it, which have since been repaired.

The government has ordered inspection by the CRRI before taking a decision on throwing it open for vehicular traffic up to 12 tonnes.

Meanwhile, the government has requested the citizens, particularly the commuters, to co-operate with it and use to alternate route for travel via Borim Bridge.

The government will also make arrangements for ferry service during the period the bridge is closed for traffic for three days for the commuters to cross river Zuari.

Good news for Zuari traffic

The Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) which was assigned the task of testing the Zuari bridge, submitted the report of the bridge to the Public Works Department (PWD) today.

Apparently, the report recommends that the bridge can be opened for vehicles upto 12 tonnes.

PWD sources informed Herald that the report was submitted to the PWD this evening. The PWD will submit the report to the government shortly after which an appropriate decision will be taken.

The CRRI officials had inspected the Zuari bridge earlier this month. A load test was also done. A senior PWD officer told Herald that the CRRI has recommended that the bridge can be opened for heavy vehicles upto 12 tonnes.

This implies that the 50-seater buses and 4-wheeler trucks can be allowed on the bridge. However, six wheeler trucks cannot be permitted across the bridge.

Sources said that the CRRI has also recommended that certain precautions will have to be taken including time to time testing of the bridge and maintenance.

As the CRRI report is yet to be submitted to the government, PWD sources refrained from divulging more details of the report.
