‘Human errors contribute to 83 percent road mishaps’
Andhra Pradesh achieved the dubious distinction of having the highest number of road accidents in the country.
Unless urgent remedial measures are taken, more people will lose their lives, said Joint Transport Commissioner NV Subba Rao. Speaking at Safety Always for All Roads (SAFAR) programme at Andhra University Engineering College here on Thursday, Rao said 83 percent of the accidents take place due to human errors therefore, they have to take necessary precautions. He observed that more than 10 lakh people die in road accidents every year throughout the world and about one lakh die in India. Rao said awareness programmes were being conducted for drivers and others in the transport sector to reduce the number of accidents. It is essential for youths to acquaint themselves with ways to prevent road accidents and educate others. Deputy transport commissioner S Venkateswara Rao said 500 persons were dying road accidents in the district every year and stressed the need to wear helmets and other protective gear to avoid injuries and fatalities. AU Engineering College principal A Ravi Prasad, University Press and Publications director S Ramakrishna Rao, motor vehicle inspector AH Khan and others took part. Quote:
