A small but beautiful coastal town 40 kms south of Kochi and only 20 Kms from Alappuzha and also 30 Kms from Kottayam. Cherthala is well connected by road (right on NH 47) by rail (a major hub on the Alleppey-Ernakulam coastal line) with direct connection to major cities in India and also by waterways to adjacent towns. Government of India has selected the Cherthala - Kanyakumari sector of NH 47 for widening under the program to be implemented with the assistance from Japanese Bank for International Cooperation

. This was disclosed by Dr M. K. Muneer, Minister for Works, Government of Kerala while addressing at the press conference on 9th June 2003. The total project cost for developing the 205 km stretch of NH 47 would come to Rs. 1350 crores.
