The number of people who died in road accidents in the district has risen in 2005 compared with 2004 and 2003, according to statistics released by the National Transportation Planning And Research Centre (Natpac).

According to the recently released data, the number of people who died in road accidents in 2005 is 283. It was 246 in 2004 and 229 in 2003.

The rise in the number of people injured in road accidents is still higher in 2005. The figure is 2,348, whereas it was 2,082 in 2004 and 2,039 in 2003.

The number of accidents that occurred in the district in 2005 was 3,513. In 2004, the number of accidents was 3,194 and the following year, 2,914.

The accidents that occurred on the stretch of National Highway 47 passing through the district also showed a considerable rise in 2005 compared with 2004. As many as 1,421 accidents were recorded on the highway stretch in 2005 compared with 1,225 in 2004 and 1,092 in 2003.

The number of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses, mini Lorries, cars and two-wheelers involved in accidents in the district recorded an increase in 2005 compared with 2004. At the same time, the number of private buses, Lorries and jeeps involved in accidents fell.

The number of accidents that occurred during daytime was higher than those during night. Rash driving and blatant violation of traffic rules are found to be the reasons for accidents in most incidents.
