| Vadodara Vadodara is a district in the eastern part of the state of Gujarat in western India. The city of Vadodara (Baroda), in the western part of the district, is the administrative headquarters as well. How does it administer the Road Safety issue, though? Please comment. |

I live in Vadodara and am shocked to see the condition of the traffic on
Vadodara roads. I have written many letters to the newspapers before this, but to no vail. The condition of traffic in Vadodara is going from bad to worse day-by-day, thus threatening our own existence. Is this what we are offering to our children? I am very much concerned about the safety of general public (including those driving any kind of vehicle, and pedestrians). It seems that nobody is concerned about the safety and well-being of self, leave aside the of others. In addition to the offences like driving without helmet, triple seat driving on 2-wheeler, driving without proper license, rash driving by high school going kids/college students, not respecting traffic signals, etc. it does not take much time for one to witness the following on the roads: 1. Driving on the wrong side of the road (even Policemen have been observed flouting this rule!) 2. Driving into a 'No Entry' 3. Innovative ideas on the use of s (while it is banned to use the in many countries while driving) 4. Fancy number plates (some of them do not have it at all, rather use it as a swanky display board!) The traffic department seems to be ignorant about the enfourcement of rules, nobody seems to be watching. In turn we also observe that the offender blaims the other person, ignoring to respect the individual who is not at fault. In the scarcity of manpower in the traffic department, I feel that this can be tackled at the root level, where it originates. 1. The vehicle manufacturers should themselves generate awareness by not giving adventurous advertisements (like traffic cutter) which instigates dangerous driving instincts in the drivers. Instead they should come out with messages on safe driving practices, respecting the traffic signals and boards, etc. 2. The vehicle dealers shoud provide training on traffic rules during the selling, and urge the people to respect them. 3. Schools may be used to provide training to students, who in turn can educate others through exchange of thoughts. 4. These also need to come from within oneself as to create a healthy and safe 'Society of Tomorrow'. Self-discipline is the best form of discipline. 5. The RTOs need to be stricter in enforcing rules. All the more, we are also becoming a laughing stalk for other countries who just can't hold themselves laughing at the pathetic conditions of the face of the Indian roads and traffic. I request all the fellow citizens to come forward and spread awareness in order to make our roads and cities a better living place for the generations to follow. |
