| Lucknow Regarded as one of the finest cities of India, Lucknow represents a culture that combines emotional warmth, a high degree of sophistication, courtesy and a love for gracious living. Lucknow, 'the golden city of the east' is struggling to retain the old world charm with growing population and traffic chaos. Will the present day road condition and traffic plight of the city put the Nizams and Nawabs of yore at shame? |

Lucknow: Fancy a clean and organised Charbagh, minus blaring horns, unruly vehicles and soaring tempers. It is difficult, but with traffic administration virtually ‘up in arms' against vehicles flouting traffic laws, it may become a reality.
"The target of the monthlong drive is Lucknow Road. We will ensure that vehicles stop in the last lane, while dropping or picking up passengers. The road in Charbagh is divided into three running lanes and the fourth one is for the vehicles that have to stop. If vehicles stop one after the other in the queue, there would be no congestion. Then for the past two days we are also trying to remove roadside vendors in Charbagh. Although 30 per cent of them have come back, I am sure if they are checked regularly for some time they would leave the area because they will not want to spoil their business," said superintendent of police (SP) traffic Ratan Kumar Srivastav. The SP said that the number of vehicles is going up each year but much is not changing when it comes to resources. In 1991, 22,000 vehicles were registered, in 2001 the number increased to 45,000 and in 2006 the number was around one lakh. With limited manpower, it was difficult to ensure that there were no violations, he said adding that they could not regulate the traffic with just four traffic constables and needed mega-planning. Terming traffic congestion as a natural process of development, Srivastav said that they could not stop that but could think of keeping pace with it by developing the city on the lines of metro where they had flyovers and other infrastructure. In today's drive, 107 vehicles were fined and Rs 9,300 was collected as fine. Some 20 to 25 black films were removed. However, no hooters, sirens and beacons were found. Quote:

In the center of the city is the Hazratganj area, where most of the hotels and the main shopping area are located. Most of the interesting monuments are in the northwestern part of the city, near the Gomti River. Traffic is Cool…
