| Lucknow Regarded as one of the finest cities of India, Lucknow represents a culture that combines emotional warmth, a high degree of sophistication, courtesy and a love for gracious living. Lucknow, 'the golden city of the east' is struggling to retain the old world charm with growing population and traffic chaos. Will the present day road condition and traffic plight of the city put the Nizams and Nawabs of yore at shame? |

Taking Pride In Breaking Rules
The Times of India on Monday got down to have a first-hand feel of the impact of the high court order to check blatant violation of Motor Vehicles Act, especially the illegal use of beacon lights, improper display of registration number and dark glasses. And the results were shocking. In a total of 240 frames that were clicked, front/side/rear of 152 four-wheelers were found to be clearly visible. Of these, atleast 94 had registration number plates that could not be read from a distance of five metres. It was either too small or fancy fonts or poorly visible base print that made the plates unreadable.
Interestingly, of these 94 cases, 14 registration plates had “Government of Uttar Pradesh” painted on them which was clearly readable from even as far as 25 metres. The photographs showed atleast six fourwheelers which had window-panes and rear screen virtually opaque - so dark that even a layman would be able to decide if such a degree of tint in glasses was permissible or not. Another nine of them did not have a registration plate, what to talk of readability. As most of the four-wheelers were photographed from the rear end, pressure horns usually installed in front of the vehicle were out of the frame. Still, there were two vehicles which had such horns installed on them. The photographs were randomly clicked over a duration of 60 minutes at a stretch from a single location and camera angle. The camera was installed on the footpath right outside the police booth that is placed on a traffic island in the beginning of the road that leads to Vidhan Sabha from Allahabad Bank Crossing in Hazratganj. This particular end of the road is fed by vehicular traffic from Ashok Marg, main Hazratganj (the Kotwali road) and Raj Bhawan road heading for Vidhan Sabha Marg and beyond. Date: February, 19, 2007. Time: 2:25 pm to 3:35 pm. Place: Police booth, Allahabad Bank crossing. Frames clicked: 240 Vehicles examined: 152 Improper number plates: 100 .
