Hyderabad
Hyderabad - Istanbul of India. Jami Masjid, Toli Masjid, the Char Minar. Hustle and bustle of market life. Golconda Fortress, tombs of the Quatab Shahi Kings. Central Library, Osmania University, Public Gardens, Osman Sagar. Colourful bazaars, traditional Muslim gear and Mughlai delicacies. Hub of IT & Telecommunications, MNCs, superspeciality hospitals, medical tourism. Pleasant climate, magnificent cuisine, Hyderabadi Biryani, splendid shopping areas. But how is this fascinating amalgam of cultures coping with the traffic and road problems?

Shamshabad fliers in for traffic jams

If you are planning to take the first flight out of the city's swank new airport Shamshabad in March 2008, be warned that you might miss it if you didn't start from home early. Blame it on traffic.

For, of all the airport connectivity projects being built, only one is up to speed, the rest languishing in different stages of delay.

The Shamshabad international airport is scheduled to go operational in March 2008. The airport is likely to handle about 200 landings and takeoffs in its first year of operation.

No less than four road- and rail-based projects have been planned to ensure connectivity to the airport. Of these, only the Outer Ring Road (ORR) phase I, a 22-km, six-lane freeway from Gachibowli to Shamshabad, seems likely to keep its date with the first flight.

Having begun work in April, its two contractors, Russian firm Transtroy and Taiwanese company Continental Engineering, each working on 11-km stretches of ORR-I, are likely to meet the deadline.

the rail route is supposed to end in side the airport. but dunno if the work has begun..

and since shamshabad is outside the city, it wuld take max time to get out the city. at present a drive of 5 kms in city takes me about 45mins(drive from S.R nagar to Begumpet)

also the greenlands flyover is expected to be completed by mid nxt yr
