Hyderabad
Hyderabad - Istanbul of India. Jami Masjid, Toli Masjid, the Char Minar. Hustle and bustle of market life. Golconda Fortress, tombs of the Quatab Shahi Kings. Central Library, Osmania University, Public Gardens, Osman Sagar. Colourful bazaars, traditional Muslim gear and Mughlai delicacies. Hub of IT & Telecommunications, MNCs, superspeciality hospitals, medical tourism. Pleasant climate, magnificent cuisine, Hyderabadi Biryani, splendid shopping areas. But how is this fascinating amalgam of cultures coping with the traffic and road problems?

Cool Pedestrian-friendly signals

City to get Pedestrian-Friendly Signals

Quote:
Brand New Pelican Signals To Help Cross The Road Safely

Countless pedestrians in the city may soon hop, skip and jump across arterial roads without getting caught in vehicular logjam.

The city is slated to get 50 pedestrian-friendly signals called Pelican signals at major junctions like Ameerpet, Greenlands, Khairatabad, Somajiguda.

Quote:
Pelican signals, basically meant for pedestrians, have two lights, one green and the other red. When a group of pedestrians want to cross the road, they can press a button on the pelican signal. Following which a green light for pedestrians and red for vehicular traffic would flash. Thus pedestrians can easily get across the road. The lights would go off automatically as per pre-set timings.
The traffic police have asked the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) to install these pelican signals at 50 listed junctions and main roads. The civic body would start putting up these signals in a couple of months. In a phased manner all major roads in the city would have the benefit of pedestrian signals. The cost of implementing the project would be borne by the MCH.

Pelican signals are nothing new to the city as earlier, on an experimental basis, they were installed at some roads in Himayatnagar, Secunderabad and some residential areas. But indiscriminate use by pedestrians made them defunct. Also, as they were not integrated with the signals at the nearest junction, a state of confusion arose.

“This time we have chosen pelican signals with micro-processors. Once a group of pedestrians press the button for a green light, it cannot be pressed again in the next ten minutes. This difference in time can be preset,” additional commissioner of police (traffic) A K Khan told TOI. The pelican signals would be integrated with conventional traffic signals at junctions. So, when pedestrians get green on the pelican signal, the red light at the junction signal would get activated thereby ensuring coordination.

Traffic officials said that the existing pelican signals would also be repaired and incorpo- with the micro-processors. If rated pedestrian signals prove effective at the 50 locations more such signals could be installed in the city.

According to traffic police, the signals are required together with the proposed footover-bridges to provide succour to the hapless pedestrian in the city. Walking across the road may no longer be a nightmare then.

Pedestrian

I have read your article and am pleased that pelican crossings are being installed. I only hope they are not installed willy nilly. There is a lot of surveying and planning to installing a pelican crossing. It should not be frustratiing for the pedestrians or the motorists. Only then will people use it properly. It should be uster friendly.

I have published a book that gives guidelines to pedestrians and motorists. Pl visit my website www.streetwise.co.in

A pelican crossing means: PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled crossing. It’s a type of pedestrian crossing. It features a standard set of traffic lights, plus a push button and a further two coloured lamps for pedestrians using the crossing.
