| Hyderabad Hyderabad - Istanbul of India. Jami Masjid, Toli Masjid, the Char Minar. Hustle and bustle of market life. Golconda Fortress, tombs of the Quatab Shahi Kings. Central Library, Osmania University, Public Gardens, Osman Sagar. Colourful bazaars, traditional Muslim gear and Mughlai delicacies. Hub of IT & Telecommunications, MNCs, superspeciality hospitals, medical tourism. Pleasant climate, magnificent cuisine, Hyderabadi Biryani, splendid shopping areas. But how is this fascinating amalgam of cultures coping with the traffic and road problems? |

Female riders in Hyderabad often write letters to traffic cops, requesting for exemption from wearing a helmet.
Safety does not really seem a point of concern for young girls who are surprised by the helmet check outside their college. Nidhi, a student, said wearing a helmet spoils the just-out-of-shower, wet look on the hair. "My head pains a lot. And my hair does not set," she said. "We spend atleast Rs 4000 a month, for hairstyling and grooming. It spoils the hairstyle. That's the main reason. And it is such a burden on the head," added another. The cops however, are not amused. "Many complaints are received. When we write a challan, many come up with silly reasons like hair problem, headache etc. But we explain to these teenage girls that a helmet has been manufactured only after a thorough study," said Sampath Kumar, Reddy, Additional ACP, Traffic. Ever since wearing a helmet was made compulsory in Hyderabad in January last year, the police department has been receiving repeated requests from girls asking to be exempted because it spoils their hairstyle. Wearing Helmet: It should be mandatory for everybody because of SAFETY CONCERN... News Source: |

safety first -----yes!
Hello,
I have had three motorcycle accidents and a helmet has saved my life, I definitely advocate a helmet. I have written a book on traffic safety that you can buy in Hyderabad. Last edited by ravikant; 07-02-07 at 01:47 PM. Reason: Promotion through Website |

Inspite of being a woman driver,I don't see any meaning in the reasons given for not wearing a helmet. What is the use of a hair style if we don't exist after an accident? It's really surprising that somebody has to impose a law on us for our own safety.

Yeah. Safety of life first then hair! But people who refuse on such grounds will not do so if there are no exemptions at all, like for Sikh men, for whom it is not practical to wear a helmet above their turban(I hope that is the word). In my opinion only people with claustrophobia should be exempted, including pillion riders. For others-wear helmet or don't ride on public road. Period.

Its just ridiculous that people have to be convinced about their own safety and so stupid that girls give priority to looks and hairstyle over their lives.
