Pune
Maharashtra's seat of culture, laid back, insane traffic, a few curious, but good watering holes, one of the most flamboyant race courses, has the fastest growing suburb of Asia, the Scotland of the East, pensioner's paradise. Osho, the ABC farms. The hot afternoons, the lovely nights and early mornings. The Misal and Usal. The Batatachi Bhaji!. How is the Roads and Traffic though?

Now, men in khaki...

Now, men in khaki can nab erring motorists

Move To Tide Over Shortage Of Manpower

Taking a significant step towards enforcing traffic rules in the city, police commissioner Jayant Umranikar on Thursday granted powers to local police station officials to nab motorists violating traffic rules.

The decision was taken as the city traffic police are facing severe shortage of manpower. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Mahesh Ghurye said 480 odd personnel could not monitor about 19 lakh vehicles in the city effectively. “Hence, it was proposed that the staff attached to 21 police stations and 95 police chowkies be granted special powers to catch errant motorists.”

The proposal will be implemented in the city and Pimpri-Chinchwad from April 2, Ghurye said. At present, police personnel attached to local police stations do not have powers to seize driving licences of errant motorists.

To implement the new scheme, the city traffic branch will first distribute ‘Licence Temporary (L-Tem)’ receipt books to police stations and chowkies to enable policemen in khaki to nab errant motorists and seize their driving licences.

Station officers at police stations or chowkies will issue LTem receipts to the motorists, stating the fine amount. Motorists will then have to collect their licences from the concerned divisional traffic offices after paying the fine.

The special power is for personnel above the rank of head constable up to assistant police inspector. “We are also thinking of extending the powers to police inspectors of police stations,” Ghurye said.

Apart from traffic police personnel, staff of police stations present on the road to control crimes would execute the L-Tem formalities. The rest of the formalities would be done by the traffic police personnel. Ghurye added that the move would also help increase fine collection.
