Infotech (IT) biggies in the city are examining a common transport service to the Hinjewadi IT park under the STPI ( Technology Parks of India) umbrella.

Presently, companies are allowed to hire and operate buses for their own employees, but are restricted from running a common transport facility as this would mean a stage carriage service, which remains the sole prerogative of the state.

The STPI — the ministry of information and communication technology’s umbrella organisation for promoting exports — is widely seen as an apt foil for overcoming this hurdle by lending its name to such common service.

This is part of the three options being explored under a joint effort, set off last year, by the Pune Traffic and Transportation Forum (PTTF), which is into building a sustainable traffic and transport model for the city, and the Exporters Association of Pune (SEAP).

The exercise assumes significance considering that more than 10,000 employees commute daily in buses hired by IT companies, from different parts of the city to Hinjewadi, the state’s showcase IT park located 15 km northwest of Pune.

So far, much of the PTTF-SEAP energy had gone into building consensus among IT companies for common transport. However, in the last one month, the effort has picked up momentum in the form of a neatly drafted proposal.
