Chandigarh
Modern city. Le Corbusier. Nek chand. Kalpana Chawla. Shabir Bhatia. Kapil Dev. Wide straight roads. Landscaped roundabouts. No sector 13? Cricket stadium, Education mecca, engineering, art, fashion design, architecture. Girls zooming on two-wheelers. Univesity campuses. Rock garden, Rose garden, Sukhna Lake and beautiful view of the mountains. Mangoes, Amaltas, Bougainvilleas, Quiet. No nightlife. NO Traffic Jams! Is it really so?

Traffic offences at a high: 85,171 challaned

CHANDIGARH: Some of the best roads in Chandigarh have been witness to some of the worst accidents. Rash driving and over speeding have resulted in the rapidly rising number of deaths and injuries due to vehicular accidents. Traffic indiscipline is becoming a growing problem, going by the hundreds of challans that are being issued every day. The total number of people challaned till September this year stood at 85,171, a figure fast catching up with the total number of 96,927 people who were challaned last year.

Data provided by the Chandigarh traffic police on the total number of challans issued and the various types of traffic offences under which they were challaned shows a growing number of city residents infringing traffic regulations. The figures of challans for driving without a helmet (23,565) and jumping a red light (11,919) are high. Newer offences, incidents of which are rising rapidly, are - apart from driving without a seatbelt on or a helmet - drunken driving, parking on the wrong side of the road, using s while driving, driving by minors and driving on the wrong side of the road.
