Concerned with the way Delhi roads are getting clogged with traffic, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is planning a link road to connect National Highway-1 (Delhi-Chandigarh), NH-10 (Delhi-Rohtak) and NH-8 (Delhi-Jaipur). This is expected to take take considerable load off Ring Road and Outer Ring Road.
“A 45-km-long four-lane link road is proposed from NH-1 to NH-8. It will start from 1.5 km off Singhu border near Narela sub-city on NH-1 and cross Rohini to touch NH-10 on Rohtak road near Nangloi. it will then go on towards west of Dwarka before heading for Gurgaon near Sultanpur lake on NH-8. The road is expected to be complete by 2009-10,” a senior Delhi government official said.
The link road will connect the upcoming Narela sub-city, Rohini and Dwarka, taking considerable load off the capital’s arterial roads—Delhi has a staggering 45 lakh vehicles already.
There is an average volume of 10,000 Passenger Car Units on the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road daily.
Delhi Traffic Police has already approached the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways over creating two-lane service roads along NH-1 from Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar to Singhu border, the stretch which the National Highways Authority of India is widening already. The matter is now with the High Court-appointed Hemraj Committee.
“The two-lane service road is required in order to segregate fast-moving interstate traffic on NH-1 from light local traffic. We have also proposed two underpasses at Mukhmelpur and Palla Bakhtawarpur junctions on NH-1.
“All these arrangements are required as the upcoming Narela sub-city will generate high traffic volume and the four-lane road is also slated to come up from and join NH-8 ahead of Gurgaon,” said N orthern Range DCP (Traffic) H P S Virk.
