Chandigarh
Modern city. Le Corbusier. Nek chand. Kalpana Chawla. Shabir Bhatia. Kapil Dev. Wide straight roads. Landscaped roundabouts. No sector 13? Cricket stadium, Education mecca, engineering, art, fashion design, architecture. Girls zooming on two-wheelers. Univesity campuses. Rock garden, Rose garden, Sukhna Lake and beautiful view of the mountains. Mangoes, Amaltas, Bougainvilleas, Quiet. No nightlife. NO Traffic Jams! Is it really so?

Thumbs up Extraordinary Driving Skills of Chandigarh Women

MOHALI: Throwing a strong statement on International Women’s Day, as many as 30 ladies in Mohali took out a car rally on Sunday and ruled on an 0-km stretch. Letting their hair down to enter a supposedly male domain, women surprised many with their extraordinary driving skills.

Some of the women participants who were taking part in the rally for the second and third time felt that such an event is the best way to celebrate the spirit of women.

With enthusiasm written all over their face, women participants entered the field full of confidence and energy. On the sidelines of this rally, one of the participants, Supreet Dhiman said that she had participated in many adventurous sports, but never had a brush with cars. The rally started from Mohali and culminated at Barog in Solan district of Himachal.

The cars zig-zaged through Chandigarh to create awareness on not just International Women’s Day, but also promoted the cause of road safety and safe driving. The women’s cavalcade passed through Madhya Marg, Manimajra, Chandi Mandir, Pinjore, Kalka and Dharampur. The event was organized under the aegis of Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI).

Organizers of the event said that Women’s Car Rally 2009 is an appropriate gift to city’s fairer as it not only gives ladies a chance to show their skills in a previously male-dominated sport, but also celebrates and promotes women empowerment. Speaking about the event, JD Ghai, organizer, said, ‘’Enthusiastic participation and a host of special prizes have made the day eventful. Special prizes were presented to the best-dressed couple, best period costume to compliment vintage cars and best Vinatge car.’’
