![]() Opening Of 2 Flyovers On NH-8 To Ensure Signal-Free Traffic For 13 Km The opening of two more flyovers on Dhaula Kuan-Gurgaon access control highway on Tuesday morning eased the commuters’ distress during the peak hours. Thanks to the flyways, commuters covered about 13 kilometres between Palam crossing and IFFCO Chowk in 10 minutes. But there is more good news in the store. Now it’s official that two more flyovers on this stretch — at IFFCO Chowk and South City crossing — will be opening by the end of this month. ‘‘We are sure that the entire stretch will open before September 2007, which is the deadline of the project. All the stakeholders are putting their efforts to make that come true,’’ chairman of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Pradeep Kumar, told TOI. He also added that one carriage way on Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Marg crossing would be open in April. ‘‘With the completion of two more flyovers this month, our focus will be to move entire manpower and machinery to RTR,’’ Kumar said. Inaugurating the 1.8 kmflyover at Mahipalpur crossing, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said that besides bringing enough relief to the regular commuters, attending marriage parties will not be a problem. ‘‘This is because they can drive past without any halt,’’ she added. Union surface transport minister T R Baalu also said that the project would be complete before time and that would bring in an altogether driving experience for the commuters. While inaugurating the flyover at Udyog Vihar crossing, Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said that commuters will no longer have to drive additional three kilometres via Samalkha to reach Mahipalpur. Last year, Rajokari, Rajeev Chowk, Jharsa and sector 31 flyovers were opened for traffic movement. ‘‘It was a memorable day for daily commuters. I enjoyed the freewheeling and no long jam relief,’’ said Sumant Kishore, an MNC executive who commutes from Vasant Vihar to Gurgaon everyday. ‘‘To achieve completion of the project by September, an additional hot mix plant of 240 tons per hour has been set up. Two cranes of 180 tons have been bought exclusively for the RTR-Palam intersection construction, besides two additional concrete batching plants of 60 cubic meters and 30 cubic meters per hour have been installed,’’ said Rafi Khan, spokesman of D S Construction, which is constructing the stretch on BoT basis. Meanwhile, addressing media persons and Haryana chief minister on the inaugural ceremony of Maruti Suzuki plant at Manesar in Gurgaon, Japanese ambassador Y Enoki said: ‘‘It’s good that two more flyovers were opened and the expressway will complete soon. But Haryana, and more particularly, Gurgaon has to put in place best road connectivity to the ports in Maharashtra and Gujarat to export the targeted one lakh motor vehicles to other parts of the world.’’ Responding to this, the chief minister said that the state would put all efforts to provide best connectivity to the Delhi-Mumbai exclusive freight corridor and this would help all such exports. The much-expected flyovers at Mahipalpur in Delhi and Udyog Vihar Crossing at NH-8 in Gurgaon, Haryana, have been opened to traffic. The opening of the two flyovers will provide smooth ride to the commuters between Gurgaon and Delhi. Cheers

According to transport planner N Ranganathan, unless a transport plan is formulated, the advantage of opening the non-stop traffic corridor will not serve any purpose. ‘‘The authorities in Gurgaon need to manage three types of traffic — long distance traffic heading towards Jaipur, vehicles ending up in Gurgaon and the intra-city traffic. Moreover, the car-owning population of Delhi is now making maximum vehicular trips to Gurgaon during peak hours,’’ Ranganathan said. Estimates by RITEs shows at least two lakh vehicles originating from Delhi terminates in Gurgaon. Therefore, he said, there has to be plan to deal with intra-city traffic and the vehicles terminating in Gurgaon. ‘‘The traffic jams as of now at successive crossings are temporary ones. But if we don’t have the plan to manage traffic flowing in to Gurgaon, snarls will back off to the main road,’’ said Ranganathan. In fact, the unpreparedness to manage the traffic flow inside the city has become the reason why the traffic heading to Udyog Vihar and Kendriya Vihar have started backing off to the main road.
