Kolkata
Amar Sonar Kolkata. City of Joy! Trams, mini buses, rosogolla, mishti doi, buses named 12C/32A/29D. Land of Mother Teresa & Charity. Macher Jhol and ubiquitous smell of Hilsa. Horrific sweat, chappals, the 20 paisa (remember that?) Most Nobel laureattes of India. Salt Lake stadium, chaotic, poor, fleeting Communism afloat with hope. Livid theatre culture. But what about Roads and Traffic condition here - A Big Question Mark?

‘Joyride’ ends in tragedy

A disaster is bound to happen when lunatics take to the wheels in a crowded street. Such was the scene on Wednesday when people ran amok after Banshilal Das, a mentally-deranged person, stole into the driver’s seat of a state bus and drove the vehicle killing one and injuring three others. The incident took place around 5.30 pm near the busy Sealdah Court area. Banshilal was later arrested.

The bus, a property of South Bengal State Transport Corporation that plies between Sealdah and Salt Lake, was parked near the Sealdah railway station, said police. The driver was having snacks in a local tea stall with the conductor when Banshilal sneaked into the bus through the driver’s door.
