Kolkata
Amar Sonar Kolkata. City of Joy! Trams, mini buses, rosogolla, mishti doi, buses named 12C/32A/29D. Land of Mother Teresa & Charity. Macher Jhol and ubiquitous smell of Hilsa. Horrific sweat, chappals, the 20 paisa (remember that?) Most Nobel laureattes of India. Salt Lake stadium, chaotic, poor, fleeting Communism afloat with hope. Livid theatre culture. But what about Roads and Traffic condition here - A Big Question Mark?

Book on “Motoring in India”

There is good news for motorists. The first ever guide book on “motoring in India” was launched on 27-Oct-06 in the city. The book will hopefully reduce the number of stray accidents on the streets of Kolkata. The guide book, named “Car and Driving Handbook”, has been compiled by the Guide India Publication.

The handbook is an indispensible guide for car owners. It is a compilation of 31 informative subjects ranging from technical details to all available models and features of passenger cars, advice on car finance, licence, tax, fuel economy, road safety, traffic rules, penalties on violation, different driving techniques and many other subjects that are essential for the knowledge and safety of the Indian motorists.

he hand book will be made available in eight petrol pumps across the city. The “Car and Driving Handbook” has 150 pages and will cost Rs 150. The book contains all the rules and regulations which a motorist has to keep in mind while driving on the streets of India.

The inauguration of the “Car and Driving Handbook” was followed by the announcement of a unique event jointly undertaken by Indian Oil Corporation and Power 107.8 FM. The event, ADD (A Drive to Drive), is going to be organised from October 30 to November 9 to educate the motorists of Kolkata.

But the important question is "Will such kind of books and events can change the unbehavioral attitude of Indian drivers?"

I will pray for positive results...
