Big Brother to Catch Speed Demons Jumping Signals Kolkata Police plans to install road safety cameras that detect and identify vehicles breaking traffic laws, such as speeding. In addition hi-tech “simputers” which can read computer chips to determine whether driving licences are real or fake will be installed. The cameras will be installed at key crossings around the city in a bid to crack down on traffic offences. Kolkata Police have already installed static cameras to monitor traffic flow but these new cameras will include number plate recognition and will be able to pick out vehicles breaking the law to enable successful prosecution of offenders. These new hi-tech measures are being used in conjunction with plans under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission to widen certain roads and build more flyovers to ease traffic congestion in the city and make the roads safer.
