| Mumbai City of dreams. Economic capital. Movie Magic. Marine Drive, Gateway of India, Hotel Taj, Dombivili, Mulund, Bandra. Mount Mary for those who have faith in the almighty. The UNDERWORLD. The Mumbai nightlife. The city that lives by its train timings. Dharavi, Vashi, Dadar, Colaba, Bal Thackrey, bomb blasts, Prithvi Theatre, Bhel puri, neon lights, Ganesh Chathurti. Sachin’s Ferrari.
What do you think of the traffic though? |

Smart Cards to Replace Licences STARTING THIS weekend, all those applying for a driving licence will get a smart card chip licence. The state government and the regional transport department are to launch smart card chip licences and computerised registration certificates from December 10,2006. “We have a successful scheme running in Pune and will be launching a statewide project probably from this Sunday,” Maharashtra’s transport commissioner Shyamsunder Shinde told HT. “In Mumbai, Tardeo is likely to be the first office where we will be able to issue smart cards as most of the infrastructure required is being set up there. Wadala and Andheri offices are still working on creating space,” a senior RTO official said. Current licence-holders will have to pay Rs 200 to get the new smart card licences, which will be issued within a day of application. The licence will carry the photograph, thumb impression and signature of the driver. The driver’s vehicle too will be embedded with a memory chip detailing past offences committed by the cardholder, if any. “The new licences will require candidates to compulsorily visit our office to get photographed. The photo will be saved in our database and replicated on the licence. This will make life difficult for touts as nothing but a personal visit will do,” the RTO official said. The traffic police will have to use a laser card reader to extract type and number of traffic offences committed by the licence-holder. Those who have committed over three offences will have to forfeit their licence. Source: http://epaper.hindustantimes.com (Mumbai Edition) Date Of Publish: 08-Dec-06
