The Mumbai Traffic Police has launched a system that is bound to make every commuter with a grievance a happier traveller. The newest addition to its website is a tool called e-complaint, that registers complaints against errant taxis and auto rickshaws, online.
Mahesh Athavale, a policeman who looks into online complaints said, “We receive an average of about 70 to 80 complaints daily and each one is different from the other.” According to officials, they track down errant drivers with help from the Road Transport Authority (RTA), who stores registration details of taxis and auto rickshaws. After the complaint is looked into, the person who lodged the compliant is informed. The website is www.trafficpolicemumbai.org. To lodge your e-complaint click here courtesy |

DID YOU just get gypped by your taxi driver?
DID YOU just get gypped by your taxi driver? There’s good news. Not only could he be fined Rs 1,500 for a first offence, instead of just Rs 500. He could also lose his licence for 30 days — and have his car impounded for the period. Following a spate of complaints about inaccurate taxi and autorickshaw meters, the Regional Transport Authority has increased the penalty for such offences three-fold with immediate effect. The vehicle permit is also liable for suspension and could be impounded for at least 30 days. Earlier, the permit was suspended for a minimum 10 days and the driver fined a minimum Rs 500. As per the rules, all taxi meters should be tested for authenticity of meter reading by approving agencies and it should be sealed to prevent tampering. Since the closure of the testing unit at VJTI, three private institutions will now conduct the tests. Once the meters are tested, the institutes issue certificates, which the drivers deposit with the RTO and install the meter.
