A STATE-OF-THE-ART toll plaza was inaugurated on the Sion-Panvel highway near Vashi on Monday afternoon.

It will prevent evasion of toll payment by motorists, who used a bypass from Vashi and Vashigaon to avoid the existing toll naka.


It is estimated that the government lost about Rs 25,000 every day as a result.

Around 1.5 lakh vehicles which do not have to pay toll charges pass daily on the route and the existing collections are between Rs 7 lakh to 8 lakh.

Work on the Rs 2.2-crore toll plaza began in April 2005, with the Public Works Department as project management consultant and was to be completed in 12 months.

It has 12 lanes, with two free lanes provided to pass up to 5.5-metre wide vehicles of any height.

A single lane on each side has been provided for two-wheelers.
