LESS THAN a month after Bandra resident Alistair Perreira ran over seven pavement dwellers at Carter Road on November 12, there’s been another incident of drunken driving.

Pharma company owner Kartik Sampat (34) rammed his white Lancer into a hut in Borivli (W) early on Wednesday, injuring Ramesh Tadekar (26), a contract painter, and his wife Payal.

Sampat, a Dombivli resident, was dropping a female friend home when he lost control of his car (MH-09-AB-9099) and crashed into a hut in Yogi Nagar at 2.30 am.

Payal sustained bruises to her arms while Ramesh suffered internal chest injuries. Their two children, aged four and two, were unhurt.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 11) Shivaji Bodke said Sampat had been drinking at Utsav bar in Borivli (E) before the accident.

“Sampat and his friend tried to flee the accident spot. While the girl got away, Sampat was caught by people at the spot. He was arrested and taken to the Maharashtra Housing Board police station,” said Bodke.

In his defence, Sampat told HT: “I had thrown a party at Utsav as we recently acquired a factory in Boisar. Since it was late, my friend who lives in Mira Road asked me for a lift. I was going to drop her when the accident occurred.” “We arrested Sampat for drunken, rash and negligent driving, damaging property and under the Motor Vehicles Act. The car has been seized,” said Bodke.

Sampat was produced in court on Wednesday afternoon, where he was released on bail of Rs 3,000.

Payal, who had just been discharged from Bhagwati Hospital after treatment, said: “I woke up with a start when I heard a loud, screeching sound. A car crashed into the front of my house and hit my husband and me. The car would have killed us had it not hit a pole in my house.”
